Stress. It’s everywhere. But mostly at work, am I right? There seems to be so many things to do, and not enough hours in the day to accomplish them. According to the American Institute of Stress, stress is “assessed by the perception of having little control but lots of demands.” When employees become overwhelmed by the pressures of their jobs, they experience burnout. Does this sound like someone you know? Well Zip Zap is here to help! We’ve got tips and tricks to help your amazing employees overcome their stress, send burnout packing, and enjoy the workplace.

Mental health is finally being recognized for its obvious importance. Now more than ever, employees are calling in sick for the sake of their mental health. People know that if they take a day off here and there, they will feel more capable of managing their daily tasks. However, an estimated one million American workers are absent every day due to their mental health. This influx of sick days is costing companies greatly, but you can help reduce those numbers by advocating for your team.

We can only stay truly focused on something for about 90-120 minutes, especially when it comes to complicated tasks. Have you ever had to sit through one of those all-day planning meetings with the only real break being lunch in between? Those are the worst kind of meetings. Your mind wanders. Your body aches. You begin to resent your job. Employers often think that more time spent focusing on a project equals more productivity. This simply isn’t the case. The antidote? Taking breaks throughout the day to reset and refocus. As an office helper, you can send out automated reminders every two hours to encourage your team to step away from their desks, stretch their legs, or eat a snack. It could also be beneficial to have a space dedicated to quiet thought or meditation. Your people will be refreshed and ready to get back to the grind in no time.

People experience stress when they feel a lack of control. Employees can run into this when they feel like they’re constantly behind. Taking accurate, legible notes during back-to-back meetings can be exhausting. How can anyone keep everything straight? Employees can more easily juggle meetings when they are kept short and concise, and by allowing extra time to finish up notes and ideas in between. Planning for an extra five to ten minutes between meetings and clients can be the difference between feeling stressed or cool as a cucumber. Who knows? The extra time could spark new ideas as they finish jotting down their thoughts.

Nothing motivates employees better than recognition. One of the simplest ways to make a big impact in your workplace is by writing “Thank You” notes. The best part is that it’s basically free! As an office helper, you can write short, powerful notes to recognize and appreciate your team members. You don’t have to be the only one involved, either. Have a place for coworkers to recognize each other. After all, there’s no such thing as “too much appreciation”.

Office helpers have the unique opportunity to help curate the environment they want to work in. As the saying goes, coworkers that play together, stay together. Creating fun, non-work related activities will help your team work better together. Grab a board game or host a cooking challenge during lunch! The sky’s the limit for building your team and making work enjoyable.

Being an office helper is no easy task. Juggling schedules, meetings, notes, games, and “Thank You” cards can be daunting. You do so much to help your team run like a well-oiled machine. If anyone is most at risk for work-related stress, it’s you! So give yourself a pat on the back, don’t forget to take breaks when you need to, and let loose with your coworkers every once and a while. At Zip Zap, we see you! We appreciate you! And we’re rooting for you! You’ve got this!
